Transform Mental Health Care Through
Distinctive Lifespan Approach
Through its Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, Seattle University accepts nurse practitioner candidates from a variety of backgrounds:
-
Current registered nurses with BSN or master's degrees, who enter the 3-year DNP program directly
-
Non-nurses with a bachelor’s degree in another field (related to health or not), who complete an accelerated RN pre-licensure program before starting the 3-year DNP program
Alternate Entry. Our Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion (APNI) program opens doors for non-nurses. Not all nurse practitioner degree programs allow for “alternate entry.”
Distinctive Lifespan Approach. You’ll study advanced practice nursing that prepares you to provide care to patients of all ages, from early childhood to older adulthood. In addition, the degree program integrates mental health and addictions treatment in community, primary care, hospital and outpatient settings to provide much-needed comprehensive care to help address the opioid crisis.
Clinical Focus. Through clinically focused courses, with high academic standards, you’ll build key clinical competencies using a scientific and compassionate framework for mental health care.
Mental Health Leadership. Our faculty members will help you hone the leadership skills required to become a respected and independent nurse practitioner with full scope of practice in a variety of mental health settings.

EQUITY IN PSYCHIATRIC CARE
In many communities, it’s almost impossible for people to access psychiatric care. So, their mental health needs remain untreated, leaving many desperate. It’s a social justice issue. As a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a DNP degree, you can help reduce disparities in access and quality of mental health care.
COMPREHENSIVE MENTAL HEALTH CARE
To meet the need for more mental health care providers, many states allow nurse practitioners to have full scope of practice. This means nurse practitioners can evaluate, diagnose and treat patients, including ordering diagnostic tests and evaluating results as well as having the authority to prescribe medications.
